Who we are

Founded in 2012 (originally under the name of Suburban Hockey) the Sugden Road Sports Trust is a registered charity set up with the specific aim of delivering a programme of hockey coaching to local schools, many of whom have little or no organised sport.

Through our SHC Community Projects programme, we provide free and subsidised hockey coaching sessions to children aged 6-13 during PE lessons or as extra-curricular clubs. All of our sessions are delivered by qualified and experienced coaches, including current and ex-international hockey players and coaches.

“We are providing an experience that can enrich a child’s life, giving them not only a skill in a sport but a boost for their confidence too. We want them to aspire to be great players. Recent Olympic success for Great Britain has inspired a new generation to try hockey. Perhaps the local schools contain some of our future Olympic stars too... we would like to find them!”

What we do

The hockey sessions are built around fun and enjoyment. We want to inspire kids to play sport throughout childhood and into later life, build fitness and teach foundation hockey skills. Our coaches often use the “Quicksticks” syllabus designed by England Hockey, as well as adding individual twists and creative games to the sessions. We aim to put the “play” back into the playground and get children active and enjoying sport.

We aim to create self-sustaining programmes and create links between schools and local hockey clubs, providing ongoing access to hockey for children as they progress.

We know that children love playing games, so as well as delivering regular coaching to schools, we try to provide plenty of opportunities for this. We run a Schools League for primary schools in the Elmbridge/Kingston areas and in the summer term we regularly host tournaments and festivals at Surbiton HC. These events are always popular with with school teams from all over the local area trying out their new skills in a fun gameplay format.

We also offer our partner schools the opportunity to get involved in special events at Surbiton HC. Many of the children who have first played the game through the SHC Community programme have attended masterclasses run by SHC international players or been part of the Ball Patrol for top level Premier League games.
